If you are like many people, you may think of massage as simply a nice way to pamper yourself at a spa. So you may not be aware that massage therapy can actually be a beneficial medical treatment, especially for those who have been injured in an accident, have suffered a sports-related injury, have been diagnosed with certain autoimmune disorders, or who suffer from chronic stress and tension. Each of these conditions requires a unique treatment that is tailored to the individual patient. To that end, Boca Health & Wellness Center offers three types of massage therapy: deep tissue massage, Swedish massage, and lymphatic drainage massage.

Deep Tissue Massage

Those who have been injured or who experience severe, chronic pain may find that deep tissue massage is the most helpful treatment, especially if their pain is concentrated in the neck, shoulders, or lower back. It is particularly suited to those who are suffering from whiplash, osteoarthritis, sports injuries, or extreme tension. This type of massage works to break down the stiff, inflamed tissues in muscles and tendons and realign the deeper layers of muscle. When you get a deep tissue massage at Boca Health & Wellness Center, Dr. Caruso and his staff will work to break down the adhesions, or knots, that form on the lower levels of the muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Using a combination of pressure and friction, a deep tissue massage not only breaks down the hardened tissue, it also increases flexibility and releases built-up toxins from the body. Because this type of massage does involve considerable pressure, it may cause some discomfort, but contrary to popular belief, a deep tissue massage is not actually painful. You may require several sessions, but after completing your regimen, deep tissue massage relieves tension, reduces pain, and increases flexibility and range of motion.

Swedish Massage

Swedish massage is the most common form of massage in the Western world. It uses five classic maneuvers to reduce tension, increase circulation, and release toxins from the body. Long, gliding strokes move in the direction of the heart and serve as a relaxing preparation for the rest of the massage. Kneading movements release toxins, relax muscles, and increase circulation. Tapping or vibration releases tension and cramps and helps muscles to contract properly. Finally, your chiropractor will use elbows, fingers, or the palm of the hands to apply friction to the muscles, releasing the deepest knots, and increasing flexibility. To maintain the effects of a Swedish massage, you may need to have them on a regular basis.

Lymphatic Drainage

The lymphatic system is an important element of one’s immune system and its ability to function. It carries germ fighting blood cells and helps flush toxins away from otherwise healthy cells, largely by producing lymph, a fluid that nourishes the cells, drains them of waste, and filters the lymph nodes. When the lymphatic system does not drain properly, it can cause a fluid build-up in cells, hardened muscle tissue, restricted range of motion, and serious medical conditions, such as lymphangitis and lymphoma, a type of cancer that can make patients more susceptible to illness and can sometimes spread fatally throughout the rest of the body. Lymphatic drainage manually pushes lymph through the body, reducing fluid build-up and stimulating circulation. A massage therapist will apply steady pressure in gliding movements in various areas, depending on the condition they are treating. Depending on the severity and location of your lymph build-up, you may require multiple sessions to treat the problem.
